Hildegard of Bingen called it viriditas, the greening power of the Divine. I call it creativity. This summer I've decided to revisit some of my favourite books on the subject of creativity and it has been so good for the soul. Creativity is an essential part of both my spirituality and my fertility, as I believe one of the opportunities I have each and every day is to co-create with the Creator. When I listen and pay attention, the opportunities to tap into creative energy abound and that energy seems to flourish exponentially when I keep showing up and saying yes. Nurturing my relationship with creativity has looked like writing out three stream of consciousness journal pages* daily which has allowed me to release some things and has yielded new insights; following through on the ideas that pop into my head which makes space for even more ideas to come forth; accepting an invitation to write a journal article and take on some work for a fertility support program, two opportunities that came to me unbidden this summer; choosing joy through playful dates with my inner artist; and being more present and aware of all that is alive within and around me. I went into the summer prepared to embark on another treatment cycle but this is not likely to happen because my cycle has not yet resumed after the medically-induced menopause treatment for my endometriosis. It is tempting to dwell in that disappointment, but it has been such a gift to be co-creating in other ways. I am aware of what I would have missed if I was solely focused on creating a baby. As I dive into various creative endeavours, it can't help but fuel my hope and trust that my time is coming. I'm sure that being in the flow of creativity is good for fertility. *Julia Cameron calls them "morning pages" and they - along with Artist Dates - are an essential practice in The Artist's Way; in my world, bedtime pages work better The essential ingredients for creativity remain exactly the same for everybody: courage, enchantment, permission, persistence, trust - and those elements are universally accessible. Which does not mean creative living is always easy; it merely means that creative living is always possible.
